New diesel-electric traction

With its all-new family of locomotives, Vossloh Locomotives is setting new standards in terms of engineering, a sound long-term investment, and quality of consultancy. Alongside the three diesel-hydraulic models (G 6, G 12/G 18), the lineup now includes two diesel-electrics.

Diesel-electric traction opens up our portfolio to advanced innovations such as electricity storage, dual-mode drive, automatic start-stop and improvements in low-gear automatic speed control. The diesel-electric versions have redundant failsafe architecture. Normally on the four-axle locomotives each bogie is driven by its own converter assembly. As a consequence, these locomotives can return to their home depot under their own power in the event of any defects not affecting the diesel engine. With its five standard versions, our new locomotive family offers operators wide-ranging scope for choosing precisely the type of traction they need. Which form of traction is the more efficient and best-suited to the operator has to be selected on its own merits, and this is why we provide consultancy services for our customers and assist them with appropriate methods in selecting the most suitable form of traction.

In the development of the diesel-electric driveline we have been able to capitalize on groupwide synergies. The development work was carried out in close cooperation with specialists at Vossloh Kiepe Mainline Technology (VKM), a relationship allowing Vossloh AG in 2010 to benefit from its own far-reaching in-house diesel-electric competence.

For the new models we have also developed packages of optional extras that enable our customers to identify the mission profile of individual locomotives and operate locomotives as fuel-efficiently as possible.
